Dr. Fisher helped present research led by Dr. Rob McKinney at the 2026 International Family Therapy Association (IFTA) World Congress, held March 26–28 in Bergen, Norway. The IFTA Congress brings together therapists, researchers, and mental health professionals from around the world to advance family therapy through research, education, and cross-cultural clinical dialogue.
The presentation focused on clinical and psychological considerations related to bisexuality, with attention to both individual and relational experiences. It highlighted common mental health concerns that may arise for individuals navigating this aspect of identity. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the research explored the nuanced experiences of bisexual women in heterosexual-presenting relationships. The findings emphasized the importance of understanding identity within broader relational and social contexts.
From a clinical standpoint, the presentation outlined key considerations for counselors, including assessing partner support, fostering open communication, and recognizing the impact of family and community perceptions. It also underscored the importance of community connection and creating space for complex or conflicting emotions without prematurely pathologizing them.
In addition to the primary presentation, three students from Dr. Fisher’s lab - Emma Worth, Taylor Ross, and Alex Herron - presented posters at the conference, contributing to the broader scholarly dialogue and highlighting emerging research within the field.
The session concluded with a discussion inviting attendees to reflect on clinical applications and areas for continued exploration. Dr. Fisher’s participation reflects ongoing collaboration in advancing research and contributing to international conversations in family therapy.
